A '''prompt''' is a character or set of characters used in a [[CLI|command line interface]] to prompt user for action, i.e. signify readiness to accept the user's commands. The default [[DCL]] prompt is a dollar sign ($), the extended line prompt is _$. OpenVMS utilities such as [[AUTHORIZE]] or [[SYSGEN]] have their own prompts.

In OpenVMS, the prompt is an attribute of a [[Process|process]] and can be changed with the [[SET PROMPT]] command.

The current process's prompt can be obtained using the "PROMPT" item with the [[F$ENVIRONMENT()]] [[Lexical functions|lexical function]].
